New Delhi, January 17, 2026 – In a significant move to bolster Africa’s refining capabilities, the Dangote Group, Nigeria’s leading multinational conglomerate, has announced plans to double the capacity of its flagship Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex. With a current capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the expansion will elevate the facility to an unprecedented output of 1.4 million barrels per day.
This expansion, poised to make the Dangote Refinery the world’s largest petroleum refinery, involves not only increasing the facility’s crude processing capacity but also enhancing its petrochemical production. The project includes a major upgrade of the existing Polypropylene Unit (PPU) from 830 kTPA to 2.4 MMTPA and the addition of a new 1.2 MMTPA PPU, alongside the integration of a 750 kTPA UOP’s Oleflex Unit to boost Propylene production.
Engineers India Limited (EIL), a premier engineering consultancy organization under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India, has been selected once again by the Dangote Group to lead this ambitious project. EIL will serve as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) and EPCM Consultant, roles that underline their previous successful partnership on the original construction of the refinery, which was commissioned in 2024.
The contract, valued at over US $350 Million, is a testament to the longstanding relationship between EIL and the Dangote Group, built on mutual trust and EIL’s proven track record in managing and executing mega-scale projects. EIL’s involvement is expected to ensure that the expansion project meets the highest standards of efficiency and technological advancement.
Upon completion, this expansion will not only position the Dangote Refinery as a cornerstone of the global oil industry but will also significantly contribute to Nigeria’s and Africa’s economic stability. The increased capacity is anticipated to meet the growing domestic demand for refined petroleum products and reduce the continent’s dependency on imported fuels. Furthermore, this initiative is aligned with Nigeria’s broader economic goals of fostering regional development and securing energy self-sufficiency.
The impact of this expansion on Africa’s economic landscape cannot be overstated. It promises to enhance the continent’s access to high-quality fuels adhering to Euro VI emission standards, thereby supporting environmental sustainability initiatives. Additionally, the project is expected to create thousands of jobs, both during its construction and operational phases, thus contributing to local employment and skills development.
As the Dangote Refinery moves towards a new phase of development, the global energy market watches closely. This project not only underscores Africa’s rising prominence within the global energy sector but also highlights the continent’s growing capability to develop world-class infrastructure projects that can compete on the international stage.
