NHPC’s Ex-CMD Takes Charge as JERC Chairperson

Shri Raj Kumar Chaudhary, the former Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the NHPC Limited, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for UT of Jammu & Kashmir and UT of Ladakh. The official oath ceremony, held in New Delhi, the oath was administered by the Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal.

The appointment marks a significant step for Mr Chaudhary, who brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at NHPC, one of India’s leading power generating companies. His leadership at NHPC was marked by strategic initiatives and developments that significantly boosted the company’s performance and contribution to the national power sector.

During the ceremony, Hon’ble Minister expressed his confidence in Chaudhary’s capabilities, emphasizing the pivotal role he will play in enhancing the regulatory framework of the power sector in UTs of Jammu & Kashmir and Laddakh. The Minister highlighted the importance of stable and efficient regulatory practices in achieving sustainable development and economic growth within the region.

In his new role, Mr Chaudhary is expected to tackle various challenges including tariff regulations, promotion of renewable energy, and the improvement of power distribution systems. His efforts will be crucial in ensuring that the power sector supports the broader goals of environmental sustainability and energy security.

The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) is a key body responsible for the regulation of the power sector in union territories, and Chaudhary’s leadership is anticipated to bring forward-thinking policies and reforms that will strengthen the infrastructure and services in Jammu & Kashmir.
