NEW DELHI, Sept. 14, 2026 —The Ministry of Power has approved electricity exports to Nepal Electricity Authority for 18 hours a day from Sept. 13 to Dec. 31, 2026, to help Nepal meet additional power demand after recent floods damaged hydropower infrastructure and reduced domestic generation capacity.
The approval addresses Nepal’s immediate electricity requirement during a difficult period caused by flood-related damage to hydropower assets. It also reinforces the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal.
The Ministry approved exports for 18 hours daily, from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours, through two cross-border transmission routes. The approval covers up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV D/c line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV S/c line.
The approval period runs from Sept. 13, 2026, to Dec. 31, 2026. The quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026.
Recent floods in Nepal caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure, lowering domestic power generation capacity and creating an additional need for electricity. India said it remains committed to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
