The SPV was formed for the transmission system under the tariff-based competitive bidding framework.POWERGRID will execute the project through the build, own, operate and transfer model.The project includes a 400 kV Barmer-II Pooling Station, a 400 kV Barmer-II–Barmer-I double-circuit line, line-in-line-out works at Barmer-II Pooling Station, and augmentation at South Kalamb with four 765/400 kV, 1500 MVA interconnecting transformers.
The HVDC scope includes ±800 kV, 6000 MW terminal stations at Barmer-II and South Kalamb, along with the Barmer-II–South Kalamb ±800 kV HVDC bipole line. The project also includes two synchronous condenser units at Barmer-II Pooling Station.
The initiative aims to enhance India’s infrastructure for renewable energy transmission, facilitating the integration of solar power into the national electrical grid.. It supports India’s goal of achieving a renewable energy capacity of 500 gigawatts by the year 2030.
As of August 31, 2026, POWERGRID had commissioned and operated 292 substations, more than 186,952 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 638,566 MVA of transformation capacity, with average transmission system availability above 99.80%.
