On August 12th, 2023, in the vibrant city of Itanagar, an essential Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was inked, heralding the development of two hydroelectric powerhouses within the splendid landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh, with an impressive combined capacity of 3800 MW. This historic event unfolded in the presence of distinguished luminaries: Shri R.K. Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Pema Khandu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Chowna Mein, Hon’ble Dy. Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, and Shri R.K. Vishnoi, CMD, NHPC. The MOAs found their official representation through Shri Biswajit Basu, Director (Projects), NHPC, exemplifying NHPC’s commitment to this momentous endeavor. Key officials from NHPC and the Power Department, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh, graced this auspicious occasion.

Energizing Progress: Hydroelectric Power Initiatives in Arunachal Pradesh

This landmark MOA paves the way for the realization of two transformative hydroelectric Projects: the Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project (2000 MW) and the Kamala Hydroelectric Project (1800 MW). The Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project is strategically situated in the Upper Subansiri district, while the Kamala Hydroelectric Project will grace the Kamle district with its remarkable presence. The implementation of these visionary projects is set to infuse a staggering capital investment of Rs. 43,000 crores into the State’s economy, with an estimated annual electricity generation of about 12746 MU.

NHPC Limited, a distinguished Schedule ‘A’ Enterprise under the auspices of the Government of India, is a proud bearer of the ‘MINI RATNA’ status. It has consistently held a preeminent position in India’s hydropower domain, with end-to-end capabilities ranging from conceptualization to commissioning of hydro projects. The operational prowess of NHPC is truly awe-inspiring, with an impressive current capacity of 7097.20 MW, derived from 22 Hydro Power Stations, two Solar Power Projects contributing 76 MW, and a Wind Power Project yielding 50 MW. NHPC’s contribution to the nation’s total installed Hydro capacity stands at an impressive 15%.
