Rishikesh, June 25, 2025 — Shri R.K. Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director of THDC India Limited (THDCIL), underscored a major advancement in India’s clean energy drive as the company signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL). The agreement secures the supply of 184.08 MW of green energy from the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), the country’s first variable speed pumped storage facility.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Vishnoi described the deal as a testament to THDCIL’s commitment to innovative and sustainable power solutions. “With India’s first variable speed pumped storage technology, we are delivering a reliable, flexible, and eco-friendly energy source to support Gujarat’s evolving power needs,” he said. “This initiative aligns with our broader mission to accelerate India’s transition toward cleaner energy.”
A Technological First in India’s Hydropower Sector
The Tehri PSP represents a breakthrough in hydropower technology, offering dynamic operational control to help balance the grid amidst rising levels of renewable energy. The power generated will specifically address peak-hour demand in Gujarat, bolstering the state’s capacity to integrate intermittent renewable sources into its energy mix.
Leadership in Renewable Collaboration
The MoU and PPA were signed in the presence of several senior officials, including Gujarat’s Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals Minister Shri Kanubhai Desai, Additional Chief Secretary Shri S.J. Haider, GUVNL Managing Director Shri Anupam Anand, and THDCIL Director (Finance) Shri Sipan Kumar Garg, who noted the agreement as a “strategic step forward in delivering financially viable clean energy at scale.”
GUVNL’s finance team, represented by Shri K.P. Jangid and Shri Sourav Nandy, also attended the event, alongside key THDCIL officials including Shri R.K. Verma and Shri Ajay Vaish.
Supporting India’s Energy Vision
The deal reinforces the Government of India’s emphasis on pumped storage systems as essential tools for grid stability and renewable integration. As more solar and wind power enter the national grid, technologies like the Tehri PSP offer crucial balancing mechanisms to maintain reliability and efficiency.
Conclusion
This agreement between THDCIL and the Government of Gujarat sets a benchmark for public-private partnerships in the energy sector. With leaders like Shri Vishnoi steering innovation and sustainability, India is well on its path to a cleaner, more resilient power future.
