PM Modi Inaugurates Major Urban Redevelopment in Delhi

PM Modi Inaugurates Major Urban Redevelopment in Delhi

In a significant advancement for Delhi’s urban landscape, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has officially inaugurated several government housing and office structures, while also commencing the construction of additional projects within the framework of the redevelopment of seven General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) colonies. These efforts are part of a broader initiative managed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to enhance the city’s infrastructure.

The ceremony, which marked the beginning of this ambitious project, saw the Prime Minister initiate the development of over 2,700 new government residences and pivotal office buildings. Moreover, the foundation for 6,600 more GPRA flats and eight towers at Bharat Business Park was also laid, indicating a substantial expansion in governmental and commercial space.

This redevelopment project is designed to integrate more than 21,000 modern residential units into Delhi’s urban fabric, covering a built-up area (BUA) of approximately 65.42 lakh square meters, which includes essential social infrastructure. The project is not only a significant infrastructural upgrade but is also a major job creator, having generated 3.55 crore man-days of employment thus far.

A unique aspect of this redevelopment is its self-financing model, which involves the monetization of commercial built-up areas. This innovative approach by NBCC (India) Limited ensures that the project progresses without imposing financial strains on the government’s budget.

During a special event on International Women’s Day in 2026, Prime Minister Modi engaged with female workers involved in the project and handed over apartment keys to several women beneficiaries. This interaction highlighted the inclusive approach of the redevelopment efforts.

The launch event was attended by high-profile dignitaries including Shri Manohar Lal, the Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Power, and other key government officials, who joined the Prime Minister in a virtual inauguration from Burari, Delhi. The redevelopment initiative, which was greenlit by the Union Cabinet on July 5, 2016, is being jointly executed by NBCC and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

The project spans across seven colonies, namely Mohammadpur, Thyagraj Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Sriniwaspuri, Nauroji Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, and Netaji Nagar. NBCC has taken the lead in redeveloping three of these colonies, while the remaining are managed by CPWD.

The Bharat Business Park, which is part of this redevelopment, is set to provide state-of-the-art commercial office spaces equipped with the latest in sustainable and energy-efficient technologies. This includes central air-conditioning with energy-efficient chillers, an intelligent building management system, and comprehensive safety features like fire detection and CCTV surveillance. The park will also boast solar panels, energy monitoring systems, and extensive rainwater harvesting facilities, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable development.

This large-scale redevelopment is poised to transform Delhi’s governmental housing landscape, enhance its urban infrastructure, and stimulate economic growth through increased employment and revenue generation. With these projects, NBCC continues to set benchmarks in urban redevelopment, demonstrating a scalable model for other cities across India.
