On the momentous occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, NMDC Ltd. marked a significant milestone, celebrating not only the nation’s freedom but also a year of record-breaking achievements in iron ore production. Shri Amitava Mukherjee, the Chairman and Managing Director of NMDC, emphasized the company’s pivotal role in propelling India towards industrial growth and self-sufficiency in mineral resources.
In Hyderabad, at the corporate headquarters of NMDC, senior officials including Shri Vinay Kumar (Director, Technical), Shri Joydeep Dasgupta (Director, Production), and others, joined Shri Mukherjee and a gathering of employees and their families for the flag hoisting ceremony. Shri Mukherjee reflected on the company’s journey and its integral role in building a resilient and self-reliant India.
The previous fiscal year was a landmark for NMDC, with the company setting a new national record by being the first in India to produce over 50 million tonnes of iron ore, totaling 53.15 million tonnes. This achievement was accompanied by a robust sales performance of 50.23 million tonnes.
Continuing this upward trajectory, NMDC recorded a production of 15.12 million tonnes in the first quarter of FY27, marking a 26% increase from the previous year. This period also saw sales of 11.73 million tonnes and a turnover of Rs. 6,795 crore, reflecting a 2% increase from the first quarter of FY26.
Looking ahead, NMDC has set ambitious targets to further escalate production to 60 million tonnes in FY27 and aims to reach 100 million tonnes by 2030. These goals will be supported by strategic initiatives aimed at boosting production capacity, enhancing operational efficiencies, and fortifying infrastructure.
NMDC’s expansion is not limited to iron ore. The company has broadened its portfolio to include coal and steel, alongside other strategic minerals. Its first coal asset, the Tokisud North Coal Mine in Jharkhand, has been operationalized. Additionally, the commissioning of Deposit-4 and Deposit-13 at Bailadila will enhance NMDC’s processing capabilities. Internationally, NMDC has extended its reach to Dubai, exploring opportunities in copper and other strategic minerals.
The Nagarnar Steel Plant is another testament to NMDC’s growing downstream capabilities, having surpassed 7 million tonnes of cumulative hot metal production and recorded profits for two consecutive quarters.
Beyond its industrial achievements, NMDC is committed to making a positive social impact. Initiatives like the Balika Shiksha Yojana have supported the higher education of 783 young women, and the Chhoo Lo Aasmaan program has enabled 22 students to gain MBBS admissions this year, showcasing an unprecedented success rate.
Shri Mukherjee proudly stated, “A nation is not built by machines and balance sheets alone. It is built by the character, commitment, and hard work of its people.” This sentiment encapsulated the spirit of the Independence Day celebrations across NMDC’s offices and mining units, which were marked by patriotism and a sense of collective responsibility.
The event concluded with the distribution of awards to winners of the NMDC Chess Tournament 2026, among other celebratory activities, underscoring a day filled with national pride and corporate achievements. As NMDC steps into another year, it continues to drive forward, dedicated to enhancing India’s mineral production and securing a more robust industrial future.
