Around 1,000 participants took part in the 8th IIT Ropar Unity Run on Sunday, with students, staff, faculty members and their children running together on campus. Director Prof. Rajeev Ahuja joined the 5 km Fun Run and later presented medals to all finishers.
Organised by the institute’s Outdoor Adventure Club (ODAC) and Fitness Club, the event honoured the legacies of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Mahatma Gandhi. This year’s theme was “Run Together. Rise Together.”
Two distances offered to participants
Runners could choose between a 5 km Fun Run and an 11 km Quarter Marathon. Many families opted for the shorter course, while more experienced runners took on the longer distance.
Before the start, participants pledged to support one another, celebrate every stride and build a stronger, more united community. Prof. Ahuja flagged off the run, which took participants through the campus and its green surroundings. He completed the 5 km route alongside students, staff and children.
At the closing ceremony, Prof. Ahuja handed medals to all finishers. Children taking part received cheers from the crowd, according to the event account.
Director highlights community participation
“The Unity Run is not about who finishes first. It is about who shows up. When students, staff, faculty and families run together, the campus becomes one team. Fitness is the foundation of a sharp mind. I am proud of every single runner today,” Prof. Ahuja said.

Dr. Mukesh Saini, Faculty Coordinator, ODAC, said the event had grown from a small campus run into a day anticipated by the wider IIT Ropar community.
The institute said the run reflects its commitment to wellness, inclusion and community spirit alongside academic excellence.
