On March 17, 2026, in a significant development for India’s mining sector, NMDC Limited and GMDC Limited, two of the country’s leading mining entities, formalized a collaborative effort through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This strategic alliance is set to focus on the exploration and development of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and other related minerals, essential for various high-tech industries.
This partnership is designed to foster the creation of a cohesive and sustainable supply chain for critical minerals within India, enhancing not only the exploration activities but also the research and development in this sector. The agreement was inked at NMDC’s headquarters in Hyderabad, with NMDC’s CMD, Shri Amitava Mukherjee, and GMDC’s Managing Director, Shri Roopwant Singh, IAS, leading the ceremony along with senior officials from both companies.
The MOU, effective from March 16, 2026, for two years, suggests setting up a Steering Committee and a Working Group. These bodies will oversee the evaluation and advancement of the joint initiatives aimed at strengthening the nation’s capability in mining and processing of rare earths.
The collaboration is anticipated to significantly enhance the extraction and processing of rare earth minerals across India, crucial for national security, energy sustainability, and technological advancements. Shri Amitava Mukherjee emphasized the strategic importance of REEs, stating that their availability is central to India’s energy security, defense, and self-sufficiency goals. He highlighted the national call to action for mining firms to develop a robust mineral supply chain swiftly.
Looking ahead, NMDC and GMDC plan to explore further synergies through potential joint ventures, special purpose vehicles, and strategic business partnerships, aiming to amplify their impact in the critical minerals domain.
