The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by an array of dignitaries, including Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Transport, GNCTD, and Dr. Ashish Sood, Hon’ble Minister of Home, Urban Development and Education. Also present were Smt. Niharika Rai (I.A.S), Secretary & Commissioner (Transport), Delhi, Shri Prince Dhawan (I.A.S), Managing Director, DTC, and Shri K.P. Mahadevaswamy, CMD, NBCC, among others, highlighting the high-profile nature of this venture.
The Hari Nagar Electric Bus Depot is set to accommodate approximately 400 electric buses. This capacity enhancement is critical as Delhi moves towards an eco-friendlier public transport network. The depot will not only serve as a parking and maintenance hub but will also feature advanced charging stations designed to support the large fleet of electric buses. Incorporating commercial and retail spaces within its premises, the depot is designed to be financially self-sustaining. This innovative model of integrating commercial ventures within public utility spaces is expected to generate substantial revenue, thereby contributing to the project’s economic viability.
Spanning a 6.22-acre plot with a built-up area of 7.4 lakh square feet, the facility’s design includes modern offices for DTC, comfortable dormitories for staff, and a dynamic commercial hub intended to attract both commuters and the general public. Furthermore, the project will incorporate green technologies such as solar power generation, rainwater harvesting, and wastewater treatment systems.
These features are part of a broader commitment to sustainable development, which is increasingly becoming a cornerstone of urban planning in major cities around the world. The Hari Nagar depot is poised to set a precedent for future public transport infrastructures in India. By fostering an environment-friendly approach that aligns with global sustainability goals, Delhi is positioning itself at the forefront of the green mobility movement.
As this project progresses, it promises not only to enhance the efficiency of bus operations in the city but also to improve the overall quality of urban life by reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy use. The partnership between NBCC and DTC in bringing this project to life reflects a collaborative approach to tackling urban transportation challenges, ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for all residents of Delhi.
