Oil India Limited (OIL) has achieved a significant milestone in its exploration efforts with the discovery of natural gas at its second exploratory well, Vijayapuram-2, located in the Offshore Andaman Block AN-OSHP-2018/1.
This discovery, under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP), marks the first reported occurrence of hydrocarbons in this region during the ongoing exploration campaign.
The initial production testing revealed intermittent inflows of gas, and preliminary analysis of the gas samples has confirmed the presence of natural gas.
Further investigations, including gas isotope studies, are currently underway to decipher the origin and characteristics of the gas found. Such studies are crucial as they can provide insights into the potential source, migration pathways, or accumulation zones of hydrocarbons, thereby informing and refining future exploration and drilling strategies.
OIL is committed to conducting additional tests on higher-up prospects within the same block to comprehensively assess and confirm the extent and viability of the gas occurrence.
This proactive approach in evaluating and understanding the geological setup promises to enhance the exploration model and strategy moving forward.
This discovery not only underscores OIL’s capabilities in hydrocarbon exploration but also represents a promising development for its stakeholders.
The company continues to focus on leveraging cutting-edge technology and expertise to further explore and develop the hydrocarbon potential of the region, aiming to contribute significantly to India’s energy security.
