BPCL’s Eco-Friendly Leap: CBG Integration in CGD

BPCL’s Eco-Friendly Leap: CBG Integration in CGD

In a significant stride towards sustainable energy, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), recognized globally among the Fortune 500 and holding Maharatna status in India, furthered its commitment to environmental stewardship by entering into several key Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) agreements. This development occurred during the Saksham Meet held in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on February 18, 2026.

These Tripartite Agreements (TPAs) underscore BPCL’s ongoing efforts to enhance the ecological sustainability of its fuel operations by incorporating renewable gas within its City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks. This initiative aligns with the broader national aims of energy transition and decarbonization.

Rahul Tandon, the Business Head at BPCL, expressed his views on the occasion, stating, “These agreements demonstrate our systematic strategy to weave Compressed Bio-Gas into our CGD frameworks, thus propelling the green transformation of our national fuel ecosystem. Through increasing the procurement of renewable gas and elevating blending proportions, we contribute to the country’s decarbonization mission while fostering a robust, sustainable energy infrastructure for the future.”

In the Lakhimpur region, BPCL finalized three TPAs with two different producers, which collectively will handle 34 tonnes of CBG per day. These include agreements for a 10-tonne per day facility at Pilibhit with RBML (JioBP) and two 12-tonne per day facilities at Sitapur with Ladelite Power. These facilities are slated for operational commencement by July 2026, which will significantly boost the availability of green fuel in these less served areas.

These new contracts have increased the total number of TPAs in the Lakhimpur area to 18, with an overall CBG capacity exceeding 145 tonnes per day. This expansion not only enhances decentralized renewable gas sourcing but also supports the growth of the rural bio-economy.

Further expanding its renewable gas initiatives, the Amethi–Pratapgarh–Raebareli area has added two more TPAs with Reliance, introducing a 5-tonne per day plant at Ayodhya and another in Haidergarh, Barabanki district, set to start supplying in April 2026. This enhancement brings the area’s total to seven active TPAs with a combined capacity of 28 tonnes per day. With an existing 10% CBG blending rate, the target is set to reach 20% by April 2026, significantly contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and bolstering regional energy resilience.

The event was well attended by prominent BPCL officials, evidencing strong leadership and collaborative effort towards advancing the company’s renewable gas goals. From April 2025 to January 2026, BPCL has executed a total of 31 TPAs, reaching a collective capacity of 255 tonnes per day. As of January 2026, the total number of TPAs signed is 44, representing 284 tonnes per day across BPCL’s CGD network, indicative of consistent progress in renewable gas integration. With a current blending achievement of 3.6% and a peak of 5.84% in January 2026, BPCL is demonstrably advancing towards adopting green gas solutions.

These initiatives highlight BPCL’s dedication to sustainable development, leadership in national bio-energy projects, and its pivotal role in steering India towards a cleaner, greener energy paradigm.
