New Delhi, June 8, 2026: Mr. Kumar Shanker has taken over as Managing Director of Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (IGL), the largest City Gas Distribution company in the country.
IGL operates City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks across 33 districts in twelve geographical areas spanning Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
A Chemical Engineer from BITS Pilani, Mr. Shanker brings over 32 years of rich and diverse experience in the natural gas industry. His expertise covers commissioning and operations of gas processing plants, project management of petrochemical units, corporate strategy and planning, marketing, regulatory functions, and the CGD sector.
Prior to joining IGL, Mr. Shanker served as Managing Director of Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd. (MNGL) in Pune. Under his leadership, MNGL emerged among the top five CGD companies in India through strong growth, profitability, and expansion of infrastructure for domestic piped gas connections.

Over three decades, he worked in various business verticals of GAIL (India) Ltd. across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi. He possesses extensive experience in regulatory matters including grant of authorizations, open access, pipeline tariffs, and affiliate code of conduct.
Mr. Shanker has actively contributed to key policy and regulatory changes in the Indian natural gas sector over the past two decades. He played a significant role in the introduction of the Unified Tariff for the National Gas Grid System, a major reform in the sector.
He succeeds Mr. Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, who has been repatriated to parent organization GAIL (India) Ltd. after a three-year stint. IGL is a joint venture between GAIL (India) Ltd. and BPCL, with the Government of NCT of Delhi holding a 5 per cent equity stake.
