SCOPE Hosts Influential National Workshop on Succession Planning for PSE Leadership
The Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) recently held a significant workshop focused on Board-Level Succession Planning. The event was inaugurated by esteemed guests including Smt. Mallika Srinivasan, Chairperson of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), and Shri K. Moses Chalai, Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE). The workshop saw a gathering of influential leaders such as Shri K.P. Mahadevaswamy, Chairman of SCOPE and CMD of NBCC; Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Vice-Chairman of SCOPE & CMD of Goa Shipyard; and Shri Atul Sobti, Director General of SCOPE, among others.
Over 100 senior officials from Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) across various sectors participated in the event, which highlighted the critical nature of strategic succession planning in today’s competitive and technologically evolving landscape.
Key Insights from Distinguished Speakers
- Smt. Mallika Srinivasan: She emphasized that succession planning should be approached as a strategic imperative rather than a mere transactional task. Srinivasan advocated for the early identification of high-potential individuals, providing them with diverse leadership experiences, and assigning significant responsibilities at crucial career stages to prepare future-ready leaders.
- Shri K. Moses Chalai: He discussed the growing challenges faced by PSEs due to global competition and rapid technological advancements. Chalai stressed the importance of a robust leadership pipeline, continual recruitment processes, and increased participation of women in leadership roles to drive growth and competitiveness.
- Shri K.P. Mahadevaswamy: His remarks focused on the multi-faceted role of PSE Boards and the necessity for building a strong leadership pipeline that is capable of effective decision-making and possesses enhanced competencies to tackle technological and global challenges.
- Shri Atul Sobti: Sobti highlighted the need for modern PSE leaders to embody the “5 Cs”: Character, Competence, Commitment, Courage, and Compassion. He outlined SCOPE’s initiatives like the DAKSH capacity-building program and the Advanced Global Leadership Program, which are instrumental in developing a new generation of adept leaders.
- Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay: He expressed gratitude towards the dignitaries and underscored the evolution of PSEs into globally competitive entities, where leadership continuity and strong governance frameworks are indispensable. Upadhyay praised the workshop as a key step in establishing a robust succession strategy for seamless leadership transitions.
