NBCC Powering India’s Green Transition through Large-Scale Solarisation

NBCC Powering India’s Green Transition through Large-Scale Solarisation

As India accelerates its journey towards achieving Net Zero emissions and expanding renewable energy capacity, NBCC (India) Limited, a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, is playing a significant role in promoting clean energy adoption across government infrastructure projects through the installation of rooftop solar power systems.

Over the years, NBCC has emerged not only as a leading construction and project management company but also as a key partner in advancing sustainable and environmentally responsible development. Integrating renewable energy solutions into public infrastructure has become an important component of the company’s commitment towards green construction and climate-conscious development.

Under the ongoing Government initiative for saturation of rooftop solar installations on government buildings, NBCC is implementing solarisation projects across a diverse portfolio of institutional, residential, healthcare and administrative facilities. According to the latest progress data, NBCC has undertaken the solarisation of 269 government buildings spread across various ministries, departments and public institutions, with a cumulative solar generation potential of 13.41 MW.

Significant progress has already been achieved. Rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of over 5.08 MW have been installed across 93 buildings, including facilities under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, AIIMS institutions, educational campuses, government residential complexes and other public infrastructure projects executed by NBCC. The initiative encompasses a wide range of projects, including government housing redevelopments, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and administrative buildings. By integrating renewable energy generation directly into these facilities, NBCC is helping reduce dependence on conventional grid power while lowering operational energy costs for government establishments.

The environmental impact of this initiative is substantial. Once the entire planned solar capacity of over 13 MW becomes operational, the installations are expected to generate million of units of clean electricity annually, resulting in an estimated reduction of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. This would be equivalent to the environmental benefits derived from planting hundreds of thousands of trees, thereby making a meaningful contribution towards India’s climate commitments.

NBCC’s commitment to green energy received another major boost recently with the commissioning of a 485 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic plant at Lok Bhawan, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The project was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Governor of Odisha in the presence of Shri K. P. Mahadevaswamy, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NBCC. The installation reflects NBCC’s growing role in supporting state governments and public institutions in adopting sustainable energy solutions

The solar plant at Lok Bhawan demonstrates how public buildings can be transformed into clean-energy assets while reducing electricity expenditure and carbon footprint. Such initiatives also align with the Government of India’s vision of expanding renewable energy deployment across public infrastructure and promoting energy self-sufficiency.

Sustainability has increasingly become a defining feature of NBCC’s project execution philosophy. Alongside solar energy adoption, the company has been incorporating green building principles, energy-efficient technologies, water conservation measures and environmentally responsible construction practices across its projects. Several NBCC-executed developments are being designed and constructed in accordance with modern sustainability standards, contributing to healthier and more resource-efficient urban infrastructure.

As India continues its transition towards a low-carbon economy, NBCC’s growing portfolio of solarisation projects stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to nation-building through sustainable development. By combining infrastructure creation with renewable energy integration, NBCC is not only constructing buildings but also helping build a cleaner, greener and more energy-secure future for the country.
