NHPC Launches Second Unit at Subansiri: India’s Energy Future

NHPC Launches Second Unit at Subansiri: India’s Energy Future

In Faridabad, the eagerly anticipated Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, India’s largest at 2000 MW, proudly announced the commencement of commercial operations for its second unit (Unit #3, 250 MW). This pivotal event was marked by the commendations extended by Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects) of NHPC, to both the on-site and corporate teams whose efforts were instrumental in reaching this significant achievement.

Located at the juncture of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is poised to bolster India’s energy provision, enhancing both the stability of the grid and the country’s transition to clean energy.

The project reached a crucial phase with the integration of its third unit (Unit #1, 250 MW) to the National Grid at 21:00 on January 31, 2026. Following this, the second unit began operations at midnight on February 1, 2026, thereby contributing an additional 250 MW. This development brings the project’s total contribution to 500 MW, halfway to its full capacity, thereby augmenting the support for peak power demands and the seamless integration of renewable resources into India’s energy landscape.

Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD of NHPC, expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Power, the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for their unwavering support. He lauded the relentless efforts of the Subansiri Lower Project team under the leadership of Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director, and the collaborative efforts of various NHPC departments. He emphasized that the operational success of these units not only showcases NHPC’s robust technical and execution capabilities but also aligns with the Government of India’s objectives for a sustainable and self-reliant energy sector. Gupta highlighted that these milestones are crucial for the on-schedule activation of the remaining units.

Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director of the Subansiri Lower H.E. Project, extended his gratitude towards the NHPC management, corporate divisions, and execution partners including M/s GE Vernova, M/s BGS-SGS-SOMA, M/s TREL, and M/s PEL. He also acknowledged the invaluable support from local communities and stakeholders, which played a significant role in reaching these milestones.
