In a significant collaborative effort, the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) teamed up with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and GIZ, Germany to host a comprehensive workshop focusing on the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT). This initiative, which was first unveiled at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019, is a global endeavor aimed at reducing carbon emissions in heavy industries.
The workshop featured a lineup of distinguished speakers including Shri Atul Sobti, Director General of SCOPE; Shri Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML, and a member of the SCOPE Executive Board; Shri Tajender Gupta, Director of Power at BHEL; Smt. Ruchika Drall, Deputy Secretary of Climate Change at MoEFCC; Ms. Cecilia Tall, Counsellor of Innovation & Science at the Swedish Embassy in India; Mr. Sebastian Borchmeyer, First Secretary at the German Embassy in India; and Dr. Alexander Fisher, Project Lead at the International Climate Initiative (IKI), GIZ.
The event was a gathering of over 40 participants from almost 20 different organizations, encompassing both the public and private sectors. The agenda was rich with discussions on how the LeadIT platform could be used to foster international collaborations, drive innovation, and explore financial strategies to help the heavy-industry sector transition towards lower emissions.
- LeadIT’s goal is to facilitate international synergy between countries and major companies to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in heavy industries by 2050.
- The initiative is supported by the World Economic Forum, highlighting its significance on a global economic scale.
- Participants included senior government officials, industry leaders, and international representatives from Sweden and Germany, emphasizing the workshop’s international scope.
This workshop not only highlighted the ongoing efforts in industry decarbonization but also reinforced the global commitment to achieving more sustainable industrial practices by the mid-century.
