BPCL and Akasa Air Ignite India’s SAF Revolution: A Bold Leap Towards Greener Skies Awaits

BPCL and Akasa Air Ignite India’s SAF Revolution: A Bold Leap Towards Greener Skies Awaits

“BPCL is committed to providing comprehensive fuel solutions to the aviation sector through reliable supply, operational excellence and innovation.” This powerful commitment from Shri Subhankar Sen, Director (Marketing), BPCL, set the tone as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Akasa Air signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the development and adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in India.

The MoU, signed on 14.07.2026 by Shri Sujit Kumar, Chief General Manager – Marketing (Aviation), BPCL, and Shri Ankur Goel, Chief Financial Officer, Akasa Air, in the presence of Shri Subhankar Sen and Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Business Head – Aviation, BPCL, along with senior leaders from both organisations, marks a decisive step towards strengthening the country’s SAF ecosystem.

The partnership will establish a framework for the supply and offtake of SAF-blended Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) at designated airports across India. It focuses on sharing indicative demand forecasts, supporting production planning, and enabling a phased increase in SAF blending as the domestic ecosystem matures. Both companies will jointly drive knowledge sharing, policy advocacy, and engagement with government and industry stakeholders to advance India’s decarbonization ambitions in line with global frameworks including ICAO’s CORSIA mandate.

Shri Sanjeev Kumar added that BPCL shares a long-standing relationship with Akasa Air and is making significant investments, including the development of a 61 KTPA Sustainable Aviation Fuel facility at Mumbai Refinery, to facilitate SAF availability and support the aviation sector’s sustainable transition.

Shri Ankur Goel, Chief Financial Officer, Akasa Air, highlighted that sustainability is a core value for the airline, which has focused on modern, efficient operations since inception. This collaboration strengthens operational readiness for SAF and supports supply ecosystem development in India.

BPCL continues to meet the evolving fuel requirements of the aviation sector through reliable supply, operational excellence, and innovative digital solutions such as its state-of-the-art ‘Be-Winged’ automation platform. Through strategic partnerships and green energy initiatives, the Maharatna PSU is poised to play a pivotal role in India’s low-carbon future and the decarbonization of aviation.
