Rishikesh, July 4, 2025:In a key stride toward bolstering India’s energy resilience, THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has initiated the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) process for the second unit (250 MW) of its pioneering 1000 MW Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP)—the nation’s first and largest variable-speed facility of its kind.
The landmark event was inaugurated virtually by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, who praised the achievement as a powerful example of engineering excellence and congratulated THDCIL on behalf of Hon’ble Minister Shri Manohar Lal. “This project opens a new chapter in India’s energy security by integrating advanced hydro technology with smart grid responsiveness,” he noted.
Coming just a month after the first unit went operational in June, the second unit’s rollout reflects THDCIL’s rapid execution. NTPC CMD Shri Gurdeep Singh commended the team, stating, “The back-to-back commissioning showcases THDCIL’s consistency and resolve—this is how energy milestones are made.”

THDCIL CMD Shri R.K. Vishnoi highlighted the broader impact: “With all four units, Tehri PSP will scale the Tehri Hydro Power Complex to 2400 MW—India’s largest—offering clean, peak-time power and a leap forward in self-reliant energy systems.”
Director (Personnel) Shri Shallinder Singh emphasized human capital as the cornerstone of success, calling the plant a “smart balancing mechanism” for variable renewables. Director (Technical) Shri Bhupender Gupta added that the project supports India’s net-zero vision with strong technical backing. Director (Finance) Shri Sipan Kumar Garg underscored its long-term financial and operational value.
With cutting-edge systems by GE Vernova and collaboration from HCC and other partners, Tehri PSP is poised to redefine India’s hydropower playbook—where technology meets sustainability, and ambition powers the grid.
