How New Policies Boosted India’s Energy Access in 2025

How New Policies Boosted India’s Energy Access in 2025

New Delhi: In 2025, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas undertook a multifaceted strategy to bolster India’s energy framework, focusing on accessibility, affordability, and sustainability of oil and natural gas resources. This comprehensive approach was designed to support India’s fast-paced economic growth while also prioritizing national energy security.

Key initiatives included enhancing the accessibility of clean cooking fuels through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which saw its reach expand to approximately 10.35 crore households by December 2025. The scheme’s efficiency was improved by introducing a simpler eligibility process, facilitating the distribution of an additional 25 lakh LPG connections during the fiscal year.

Efforts to make LPG more affordable were evident through a subsidy scheme that provided ₹300 off per cylinder, up to nine times a year, for eligible families. This policy contributed to an increase in LPG adoption, with average consumption rising steadily.

The ministry also advanced consumer safety measures by conducting over 12.12 crore safety checks and replacing millions of LPG hoses, greatly raising safety awareness and standards.

Significant investments were made in infrastructure to support the marketing of petroleum products, including the enhancement of digital payments at over 90,000 retail outlets and the expansion of door-to-door delivery services.

In terms of sustainable transportation, the ministry accelerated the installation of EV charging stations under the FAME-II initiative, adding thousands of new charging points, and launched the APNA GHAR initiative to establish over 500 trucker amenities facilities, improving road safety and rural employment.

The gas sector saw substantial growth with the expansion of the national gas pipeline network, reaching over 25,400 km. This expansion supports the “One Nation–One Gas Grid” vision, which aims to ensure a consistent and affordable gas supply across India.

To further support the gas-based economy, the ministry implemented a Unified Pipeline Tariff, making gas transportation costs more predictable and equitable nationwide. Additionally, the expansion of city gas distribution has dramatically increased access to natural gas for both households and vehicles.

The ministry also made strides in biofuel production, significantly increasing ethanol blending rates and advancing sustainable aviation fuel initiatives, which are set to begin implementation in the coming years.

In the upstream sector, legislative reforms through the Oilfields Amendment Act and new Petroleum & Natural Gas Rules led to enhanced exploration and investment, securing India’s energy future.

Overall, these initiatives and reforms by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas in 2025 have laid a robust foundation for a secure, sustainable, and accessible energy landscape in India, supporting the nation’s ongoing economic and social development.
