NEW DELHI, 22 September 2026: Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has started an automated vehicle recognition and verification system at 10 CNG stations to check vehicle registration details against cylinder hydro-test records and prevent refuelling of vehicles without valid certification under its ongoing safety drive.The system strengthens CNG station safety by making certificate checks faster, traceable and less dependent on manual verification. It helps station teams identify vehicles with expired or invalid hydro-test certification before refuelling, reducing safety risks for customers and CNG station personnel.
The technology uses cameras to capture vehicle registration numbers and processes the details through an AI-based application. The application links the vehicle to its CNG cylinder records, checks the status through the Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization (PESO) online portal and provides real-time compliance status.
At the station level, the system sends alerts through handheld devices, LED displays, public announcement systems and mobile or online dashboards. IGL said the platform gives central visibility of compliance data and supports timely action to stop CNG refuelling for non-compliant vehicles.
The company has introduced the system at 10 CNG stations and plans to roll it out across all IGL CNG stations in due course. The source material did not specify investment figures or station capacity linked to the deployment.
IGL has also been conducting a special safety drive across its CNG network. Station personnel verify cylinder test validity and check hydro-test certificates before refuelling. If a valid certificate is unavailable, CNG is not dispensed to the vehicle.
IGL officers are making regular visits to ensure that refuelling takes place only for vehicles carrying valid hydro-test certificates. Under Rule 35, sub-rule (1) of the Gas Cylinder (Amended) Rules 2025, every CNG cylinder must undergo hydrotesting at a PESO-approved cylinder testing centre once every three years.
