GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, has commissioned its 1.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), Karnataka. The facility was originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Limited (JBPL). GAIL acquired JBPL in 2023 through the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP), under a resolution plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). GAIL then undertook revival and refurbishment work at the plant, which the company said involved engineering, technology and operational challenges.
PTA is used to manufacture polyester fibre, yarn, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin and other polyester-based products. These materials serve the textile, apparel and packaging industries. GMPL’s 1.25 MTPA facility adds to India’s domestic PTA manufacturing capacity.
The company said the plant is expected to strengthen domestic availability of PTA, reduce import dependence and support the downstream polyester industry. It is located near New Mangalore Port and has dedicated logistics infrastructure for moving raw materials and finished products.
GAIL will market the plant’s output under the G-Tex brand, using its existing marketing network and customer reach, according to the announcement.
