Shri Deepak Gupta Takes Helm as GAIL’s New CMD

New Delhi, March 1, 2026: Today marks a significant leadership transition at GAIL (India) Limited, with Shri Deepak Gupta stepping into the role of Chairman and Managing Director. GAIL, recognized as a premier entity in the Indian energy sector, welcomes this seasoned professional to the helm.

With an engineering background in Mechanical Engineering from the Delhi College of Engineering, Shri Gupta carries over three decades of extensive experience in the oil and gas industry. His career is distinguished by a robust mix of technical acumen and strategic leadership, covering a wide spectrum of responsibilities including Project and Construction Management, Contracts, Global Procurement, and Technology Selection. Furthermore, his expertise extends into Business Development as well as Operations and Maintenance.

Prior to his current role, Shri Gupta was integral to GAIL as the Director of Projects since February 2022, where he spearheaded several critical initiatives. His projects have notably advanced the company’s infrastructure in Natural Gas and LPG Pipelines, Gas Processing Units, and critical SCADA systems. His efforts are also directed towards sustainable energy solutions, striving towards Net-Zero objectives and pioneering Clean Energy standards nationally. Additionally, his oversight extends to the maintenance of an expansive network of pipelines and processing facilities across the country.

Shri Gupta’s leadership was instrumental in the successful completion of the Dabhol Breakwater Project under Konkan LNG Limited, a subsidiary of GAIL, which now supports all-weather operations. His commitment to digital transformation within the company has significantly enhanced operational efficiency and transparency.

His previous roles include significant positions on the boards of various joint ventures, such as Chairman of Talcher Fertilizers Ltd., and Director roles at ONGC Petro-additions Limited, and the South-East Asia Gas Pipeline Company Limited. Furthermore, he has served as Chairman for both Green Gas Limited and Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited, where he was pivotal in strategic planning and corporate governance.

Before joining GAIL, Shri Gupta had a distinguished 32-year tenure at Engineers India Limited, where he led several high-profile, international projects including the world’s largest single-train refinery in Nigeria and a major petrochemical complex in Bathinda, India. His strategic contributions also extended to the first greenfield refinery project in Mongolia, marking a significant milestone in India’s energy sector on a global scale.

An established thought leader, Shri Gupta has contributed numerous technical papers and articles, emphasizing innovative approaches in project execution and digital transformation, which have been recognized as best practices within the industry.

Shri Deepak Gupta’s appointment is anticipated to drive GAIL towards new heights of innovation and operational excellence in the energy sector.
