Indraprastha Gas Limited Launches Pioneering Solar-Powered CNG Station in New Delhi

Indraprastha Gas Limited Launches Pioneering Solar-Powered CNG Station in New Delhi

In a groundbreaking initiative, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the leading City Gas Distribution company in India, has inaugurated the nation’s first solar-powered rooftop on the forecourt of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station. This landmark project is situated at the Integrated Freight Complex in Ghazipur, New Delhi, and is part of a broader strategy to integrate renewable energy sources into the gas distribution infrastructure.

The new installation, boasting a capacity of 31.86 KWp, is expected to produce around 40,000 units of electricity annually, leveraging solar energy to power the day-to-day operations of the CNG station. This initiative is not only a testament to IGL’s innovative approach in adopting sustainable practices but also aligns with the broader environmental goals of reducing carbon footprints and promoting clean energy solutions.

**Economic and Environmental Impact**

The solar facility is projected to save approximately ₹4 lakh annually in energy costs, with a return on investment achievable within 5-6 years. Additionally, the shift to solar power at the CNG station will significantly decrease carbon emissions by about 45 tons per year per station, making a substantial contribution towards combating climate change.

**Comprehensive Safety and Engineering Framework**

Prior to the launch, the project underwent rigorous safety and structural evaluations, including a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) and consultations with the Delhi Fire Service and Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO). The installation features cutting-edge technology such as power optimizers, net metering systems, and module-level monitoring to ensure efficiency and safety.

**Future Plans and Expansion**

Following the successful implementation of this project, IGL is keen on replicating this model across other CNG stations within its extensive network covering Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. This expansion will not only enhance the operational efficiency of these facilities but also bolster IGL’s commitment to sustainable development and eco-friendly energy solutions.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable figures including Mr. Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, Managing Director of IGL, and Mr. Mohit Bhatia, Director (Commercial), alongside other distinguished guests and senior officials. Their collective vision for a cleaner, greener energy future was evident in their enthusiastic support for this pioneering project.

As IGL continues to lead the way in integrating renewable energy into urban infrastructure, this initiative serves as a model for other companies and sectors to emulate, highlighting the feasibility and benefits of sustainable energy solutions in commercial enterprises.
