On October 17, 2025, Shri Mahesh Kumar Sharma took over as the Director (Finance) at NHPC Limited, a leading Navratna company in the power sector backed by the Government of India. Before stepping into this role, Sharma served as the Finance Head of the Commercial Division at NHPC and as the Chief Finance Officer at NHPC Renewable Energy Ltd., which is fully owned by NHPC. He currently holds the position of Nominee Director at NHPC Renewable Energy Limited (NREL).
Academic and Professional Background
Sharma is a distinguished Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). With more than 30 years of experience following his qualification, he is also a Diploma holder in Information Systems Audit (DISA) from ICAI, where he achieved an impressive All India 3rd Rank. His leadership was recognized when he served as the Chairman of the Faridabad branch of the Northern India Regional Council of ICAI from 2006 to 2007, during which time he was honored with the ‘Best Chairman’ award for his exemplary service.
Professional Journey in NHPC
Sharma’s career at NHPC began in July 2000 when he joined as an Accounts Officer. Over his more than 25-year tenure, he has mastered numerous aspects of finance including Corporate Accounts, Treasury, and Commercial and Contracts. His extensive experience not only spans financial management of large-scale infrastructure projects but also encompasses a deep understanding of Tariff and Regulatory frameworks essential for hydroelectric power projects.
He initially served at the Corporate Office in Faridabad as part of the Treasury Management Team and played a pivotal role in the company’s Initial Public Offering. His responsibilities later expanded to include key roles at the Regional Office in Banikhet and the Dhauliganga Power Station, where he led significant restoration efforts following the devastating 2013 flash floods in Uttarakhand.
Following this, Sharma was appointed Head of Finance at the Pakaldul HE Project. Here, he managed major contracts for the construction of dams and powerhouses and implemented effective control systems in a non-ERP setting, among other achievements.

Throughout his career at NHPC, Sharma has been instrumental in shaping the financial strategies during various phases of project development, from survey and investigation to construction and operational stages. His efforts have ensured effective resource mobilization, adherence to regulatory standards, efficient treasury operations, and strict financial discipline.
