Arunachal Pradesh Witnesses Inauguration of Hydro Power Projects by Prime Minister Modi

New Delhi: Arunachal Pradesh Witnesses Inauguration of Hydro Power Projects by Prime Minister Modi:  In a significant development on September 22, 2025, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the foundation stones for two pivotal hydro power projects in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.

The projects, the Heo Hydro Electric Project and the Tato-I Hydro Electric Project, are initiatives of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh government. The establishment of these projects, with a combined estimated cost exceeding Rs 3,700 Crore, marks a crucial step towards India’s ambitious renewable energy targets.

The Heo Hydro Electric Project, with a capacity of 240 MW, and the Tato-I Hydro Electric Project, with a capacity of 186 MW, will significantly bolster the power production capabilities of the region. During his address, Prime Minister Modi underscored the critical role of the Northeast in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. He pointed out that these projects will not only enhance Arunachal Pradesh’s contributions to India’s renewable energy goals—aiming for 500 GW by 2030—but also spur economic growth and job creation in the region.

The Heo project, situated in the Siyom sub-basin of Shi Yomi district, is projected to generate approximately 1000 MUs annually. Similarly, the Tato-I project is expected to produce about 803 MUs each year. These initiatives are anticipated to leverage Arunachal Pradesh’s substantial hydroelectric potential, promoting sustainable energy while offering socio-economic benefits to the local communities.

The inauguration was attended by dignitaries including the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lt Gen K T Parnaik (Retd), Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu, and Union Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju, among others. Since its inception in 1976, NEEPCO has been instrumental in the development of the power sector in the Northeast, evolving into a significant player with a diverse portfolio in hydro, gas-based, and solar projects. Following its acquisition by NTPC Limited in 2020, NEEPCO has continued to expand its impact, contributing to the national power grid and regional development.
