SAIL’s Contribution to India’s Defence Indigenization

SAIL’s Contribution to India’s Defence Indigenization

New Delhi, August 04, 2025: In a significant development, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a key player in India’s steelmaking industry, has once again demonstrated its crucial role in defense indigenization. The company has supplied critical-grade steel for two notable naval vessels, INS Ajay and INS Nistar, marking a milestone in the country’s defense capabilities.

INS Ajay: Enhancing Naval Capabilities

  • SAIL provided special DMR grade steel plates for INS Ajay, ensuring structural integrity and stealth performance of the vessel.
  • INS Ajay, the eighth vessel in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series built by GRSE, will significantly boost India’s naval prowess.

INS Nistar: Driving Indigenous Innovation

  • SAIL also supplied special grade plates for INS Nistar, India’s first indigenously designed Diving Support Vessel (DSV).
  • Commissioned by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. (HSL), INS Nistar is set to play a crucial role in submarine rescue operations, deep-sea diving, and patrolling activities.

SAIL’s unwavering commitment to supporting India’s defense objectives highlights its strategic importance in building a self-reliant India. By supplying high-quality steel for these naval projects, SAIL continues to contribute significantly to enhancing India’s maritime readiness and defense resilience.
