At the 2026 India AI Impact Summit, REC Limited, a leading Maharatna company under the Ministry of Power, unveiled the groundbreaking live demonstration of the country’s first Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading pilot. This event, a crucial part of the summit held at Bharat Mandapam, was a key presentation under the session “India Energy Stack (IES) and the AI-Ready Power Sector: Trust, Interoperability, and Scale.” This session highlighted India’s strides towards a digital, decentralized power system that focuses on consumer empowerment.
In a pioneering live showcase, Arun Singh, a farmer from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, successfully sold 6 units of his surplus solar-generated electricity to Lakshmi, a garment store owner in Delhi, for Rs. 30. This transaction utilized a blockchain-based platform, illustrating a practical use of the India Energy Stack (IES), a Digital Public Infrastructure aimed at transforming consumers into active participants in the energy market.
This demonstration is the most concrete example yet of the capabilities of the India Energy Stack, facilitating direct energy transactions between producers, like households, businesses, and farmers, and consumers through a secure digital framework. This pilot project is foundational in evolving a participatory and decentralized energy market.
The demonstration occurred in the presence of various distinguished guests including Dr. Ram Sewak Sharma, Chair of the India Energy Stack; Shri Jitendra Srivastava, Chairman and Managing Director of REC Limited; and other notable officials from the power sector.
On the 18th of February 2026, the Union Minister for Power, Shri Manohar Lal, was shown this innovative P2P energy transaction at the REC pavilion. During his visit, he also engaged with several Technology Service Providers showcasing different AI technologies applicable to the power sector.
Two days prior, on February 16, 2026, this novel P2P energy trading platform was also demonstrated to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, at the MeitY Pavilion. This session was facilitated by Shri Shashank Misra, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power, and Shri Prince Dhawan, Executive Director, REC Limited, highlighting the practical benefits and early successes of the pilot program.
