Successful Capping of Kharsang Oil Field’s Well 76 by Oil India Limited
Duliajan, November 22, 2025 – In a significant advancement in its operational safety measures, Oil India Limited (OIL) has effectively completed the capping of Well KSG#76 located in the Kharsang Oil Field (KOF), which is managed by GeoEnpro Petroleum Ltd. (GEPL) in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. This operation marks a crucial achievement in the company’s well control initiatives.
The incident began with a blowout on October 30, 2025, during routine service operations, leading to an uncontrolled release of gas from the well. Reacting promptly to the emergency, OIL’s Crisis Management Team (CMT), along with specialists from Cudd Well Control, USA, and the GeoEnpro Petroleum Limited team, commenced their intervention on November 1, 2025. Their first task was to safely remove the damaged Blowout Preventer (BOP) from the wellhead, a procedure fraught with high risks and requiring meticulous execution.
Following the removal of the BOP, a pre-arranged capping stack was skillfully positioned at the site and securely installed on the wellhead. This crucial step redirected the gas flow to the top of the stack, effectively containing and controlling the release. The secure placement of the capping stack and the subsequent closure of the BOP halted the gas discharge, thereby stabilizing the situation at Well KSG#76.
The successful completion of this intricate capping operation illustrates OIL’s commitment to engineering excellence, thorough planning, and effective collaboration among international experts and local teams. The next stages of the well control process are set to continue as per the predefined protocols.
The perseverance, teamwork, and dedication of all parties involved, including OIL’s Crisis Management Team, experts from Cudd Well Control in the USA, the GeoEnpro Petroleum Limited team, and on-ground personnel, were instrumental in overcoming the challenges posed by this incident.
OIL has extended its gratitude towards the District and State Administration of Arunachal Pradesh, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), and the local community whose support was vital in the swift and safe resolution of this operation. The company reaffirms its dedication to maintaining the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and efficiency in all its endeavors.
As Oil India Limited continues to enhance its operational protocols, this successful capping operation at Kharsang Oil Field stands as a testament to the robust crisis management and technical capabilities of the company and its partners.
