India Enhances Clean Energy Capacity with New Tehri PSP Unit

THDC India Limited Advances Clean Energy with New Operations in Uttarakhand Third Unit of Tehri Pumped Storage Plant Commences Commercial Operations** In a notable advancement for India’s renewable energy landscape, THDC India Limited has launched the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for the third unit in the Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant, located in Uttarakhand. A significant milestone has been achieved with this 250 MW unit, which is a component of the expansive 1000 MW initiative. It stands as the nation’s pioneering and largest variable speed pumped storage project (PSP) operated by a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE). Third Unit Successfully Operationalized at Virtual Ceremony Notable Event Hosted by Union Minister of Power, Housing, and Urban Affairs** A virtual ceremony was held to mark the successful operationalization of the third unit, following the commissioning of the first two units earlier in June and July 2025. The event was presided over by Sh. Manohar Lal, the esteemed Union Minister of Power, Housing, and Urban Affairs, who celebrated this significant milestone. The event was attended by several key figures, including Sh. Shripad Naik, Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, and Sh. A.K. Sharma, Minister of Urban Development and Energy, Uttar Pradesh, alongside other dignitaries from the power sector.

Dignitaries Commend THDCIL’s Achievement

  • Sh. Manohar Lal praised THDCIL for its role in bolstering India’s power infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of PSPs in achieving round-the-clock energy reliability and supporting the national vision for a developed India by 2047.
  • Sh. Shripad Naik remarked on THDCIL’s leadership in developing pumped storage solutions, noting the strategic importance of the fully operational 1000 MW Tehri PSP and upcoming projects.
  • Sh. A.K. Sharma highlighted the critical role of advanced storage systems like the Tehri PSP in integrating renewable energy sources into the national grid.
  • Sh. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, lauded the THDCIL team for their exceptional work, not only with the Tehri PSP but also with the commissioning of the 1320 MW Khurja project.
  • Sh. Gurdeep Singh, CMD of NTPC, and Sh. Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, CEA, both underscored the national significance of integrating such advanced energy storage technologies into the grid.
Sh. Sipan Kumar Garg, CMD, THDCIL, expressed his gratitude towards the government officials and partner organizations for their support. He also highlighted the efficient performance of the previously commissioned units, which boast a round-trip efficiency of approximately 80%.

Technological and Strategic Importance of Tehri PSP

The Tehri Pumped Storage Plant is engineered to provide adaptable peak power and vital grid stabilization, which are essential for addressing the variability of renewable energy sources. This project not only reinforces THDCIL’s leading position in hydropower solutions but also significantly contributes to India’s renewable energy goals and global clean energy credentials. The event also recognized the contributions of key THDCIL officials and consortium partners, including GE Vernova and HCC, who have played substantial roles in the project’s development. The equity of THDC India Limited is jointly held by NTPC and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, reflecting a collaborative effort in enhancing the nation’s energy security. This milestone in the Tehri PSP project is a testament to India’s committed pathway towards an energy-secure and sustainable future, aligning with global advancements in clean and renewable energy technologies.
