Promotion of natural gas is part of Prime Minister’s vision to increase its share in the India’s energy basket from ~6% to 15% by 2030 to transform India into a “Gas-Based Economy”. Government is taking various initiatives to promote natural gas in households as cooking fuel as well as in transport, commercial and industrial sectors.
This would translate into an increase in the gas consumption by about three-fold, from the present level of around 185 MMSCMD to over 500 MMSCMD by the year 2030.

In a major policy reform decision and giving fresh impetus to the gas sector, the Cabinet approved a series of critical pricing reforms last year. These reforms were aimed to lay the foundation of a sustainable, affordable, and secure energy future for Indian citizens. In absence of these decisions, gas prices would have been uncompetitive to alternative fuels and hindered the expansion of the gas-based economy.PNGRB brought out amendments in its Natural Gas Pipeline Tariff regulation and implemented Unified Tariff regulations last year.

The objective of these changes was to provide access of natural gas in the far-flung areas at the competitive and affordable rates. In the 12th CGD Bidding Round, a total of 8 Geographical Areas were offered covering 6 North East States Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim & Mizoram and 2 Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. This round in totality covered 103 Districts. Subsequent to this round, authorization for development of City Gas Distribution Networks in the entire country (except Islands) shall be awarded.
Anticipated investment for 12th CGD Bidding Round is Rs. 41,000 Crores generating considerable employment opportunities. Northeastern states and the UTs of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have been under special focus of the Government to push the economic growth in these regions. The envisaged Natural Gas infrastructure development in North-East states would also lead to better utilization of domestic gas being produced locally in the region.
He has been informed, he said that PNGRB launched National PNG Drive campaign from 26.01.2024 to 31.03.2024, to promote the adoption of PNG among households and to expand PNG consumer base across a broader segment of the population through publicity and media interactions. He also gave a snapshot of the Natural Gas infrastructure of the country. Over 33,753 Kms of natural gas trunk pipelines are authorized in the country out of which around 24,623 Kms of pipeline are currently operational.

There are 300 GAs authorized in the country, covering 98% of the population and 88% of its area for development of CGD Network. 1.21 Crore domestic PNG connections and 6,258 CNG stations have been established in the country till date. All this has been possible due to the robust gas grid of India. He also aware, he said that as per Minimum work plan submitted by CGD entities, India will have around 17,500 CNG stations and around 120 million PNG(Domestic) connections by 2030.

It will help in development of ancillary industries in various segments ( CGD meters, Compressors, Dispensers etc) for fulling the dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Our Nation is heralding a profound shift towards energy accessibility and Development, he said. He extended his appreciation to PNGRB and all other stakeholders for their relentless support towards making this green initiative a reality.

He once again, congratulated them for successful completion of 12th CGD bidding round. He gave best wishes to all for accelerating the development of Gas based economy in the country.
