World Environment Day – Celebrations sans burden

World Environment Day celebrated on 5th July every year, usually sees many Indian Policy Makers and Ministers making citizens aware of what the future would hold for the nation and its people. Be it climate change, natural calamities, rising temperatures, dissolving glaciers, rapidly evolving land & sea scape et al. After all, it is they who hold the strings to the balance of the national environment vis a vis development. Corporates, every year kick off many vital schemes and programmes on this day.
Prominent amongst various industrial sectors concerned with the environment is the Energy Sector. This sector plays a vital role in reducing pollution and conserving the environment. Oil & Gas has been, after all, one of the foremost sectors for a deteriorating environment. Of course this sector also holds the key to cutting edge technology and policies which can effectively reduce pollution and step back from an impending disaster.

This year round, this sector, which usually witnesses concrete initiatives and commitments, saw a leading Corporate Head address school goers in a gala on a TV Channel of a prominent media house. Interestingly, an Ex MoP&NG Minister appeared on the same channel and appealed for better Sanitation. Those in the know indicated that the presentations appeared to be sponsored. While many experts feel that some spending for messaging & communication is necessary it’s also equally important that Public & Private Corporates directly utilise whatever funds are available for environment protection and prevention of pollution.
A more affirmative action goes a long way in actually mitigating circumstances in developing nations who are always short of funds for this vital arena. The World Environment Day reminds us that with a bit of creativity one can turn these financial commitments to the environment into a Win – Win situation. It need not be a sunk cost. Carbon Trading is yet to reach its zenith. Even Relience has become one of the biggest exporters of Mangoes after planting the fruit in its Green Zone!
