THDCIL’s Tehri PSP Roars to Life, Redefining India’s Renewable Energy Game

Rishikesh, June 4, 2025 – THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has unleashed a seismic shift in India’s energy landscape with the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the first 250 MW unit of the 1000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP). This isn’t just a power plant; it’s India’s largest CPSE-led Pumped Storage juggernaut and the nation’s first Variable Speed PSP, ready to dominate the renewable energy frontier with unmatched grid resilience and clean energy muscle.

The virtual launch was a high-octane affair, headlined by Shri Manohar Lal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, who flipped the switch alongside heavyweights like Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power; Shri Akash Tripathi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power; Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC; and Shri R.K. Vishnoi, CMD, THDCIL. THDCIL’s top brass—Shri Shallinder Singh (Director, Personnel), Shri Bhupender Gupta (Director, Technical), and Shri Sipan Kumar Garg (Director, Finance)—stood shoulder-to-shoulder, radiating confidence in this game-changing milestone.

Shri Manohar Lal didn’t mince words, calling the Tehri PSP’s first unit a “technological beast” that catapults India toward energy self-reliance. “This isn’t just about flipping a switch—it’s about rewriting India’s energy playbook,” he declared. The plant’s variable speed technology, he stressed, is a precision weapon, making India’s grid smarter, fiercer, and greener. He threw down a challenge to the sector: match THDCIL’s grit or get left in the dust.

Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Ministry of Power Secretary, doubled down, labeling the project a disruptive force in grid flexibility. “Tehri PSP is a middle finger to energy instability, paving the way for a renewable-powered future,” he said. NTPC’s Shri Gurdeep Singh piled on, saluting THDCIL’s engineering swagger as a blueprint for every PSU aiming to dominate the hydropower arena.

Shri R.K. Vishnoi, THDCIL’s CMD, was all fire, proclaiming that the Tehri Hydro Power Complex is on track to hit 2,400 MW, making it India’s undisputed hydropower king. “We’re not just generating power; we’re weaponizing off-peak energy to deliver peaking power dominance and 24/7 reliability,” he roared, daring competitors to keep up.

Fueled by GE Vernova’s cutting-edge power electronics, the Tehri PSP is built to tame renewable energy’s wild swings, delivering flexible, battle-ready peaking power. Backed by NTPC Limited and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, with HCC and other partners in the trenches, this project is a masterclass in clean energy innovation. It’s not just a plant—it’s a global statement of India’s Net Zero ambitions.

With Shri L.P. Joshi, Executive Director (Tehri Complex), and a swarm of power sector titans in attendance, the message was clear: THDCIL is rewriting the rules, and the corporate world better take notice. The Tehri PSP isn’t just powering homes—it’s igniting a sustainable energy revolution that’s impossible to ignore.
