THDCIL Achieves Historic Milestone with Synchronization of India’s First 1000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant

Rishikesh, April 24, 2025 – “This achievement sets a novel benchmark, reinforcing India’s renewable energy ecosystem,” declared Shri R. K. Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director of THDC India Limited (THDCIL), announcing the successful synchronization of the first 250 MW unit of India’s inaugural 1000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri to the Indian Grid in Pump Condenser Mode on April 23, 2025. This milestone is being hailed as a transformative step in strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The synchronization, which consumed approximately 4 MW and 13.6 Mvar for 10 minutes during testing, advances the 2400 MW Tehri Hydro Power Complex, India’s largest hydroelectric facility, toward full operationalization. The Tehri PSP is designed to balance the Northern Grid by converting surplus off-peak energy into peaking power, ensuring reliable electricity during high-demand periods.
Shri Shallinder Singh, Director (Personnel), commended Team Tehri PSP, emphasizing the milestone’s role in India’s clean energy journey. Shri Bhupender Gupta, Director (Technical), praised the team’s innovative approach, noting its significance for hydroelectric projects nationwide. Shri Sipan Kumar Garg, Director (Finance), highlighted the project’s strategic importance in aligning with THDCIL’s sustainable energy vision.
The event was attended by senior officials, including Shri L.P. Joshi, Executive Director (Tehri Complex), Shri A.R. Gairola, CGM/EIC (PSP), Shri S.K. Sahoo, AGM (Incharge EM&HM PSP), and representatives from M/s GEPIL and M/s Tractebel.
