Power Surge: India’s Electrifying Leap Forward

New Delhi, June 10, 2025 – At the National Media Centre, Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal unveiled the Ministry of Power’s transformative achievements over the past 11 years, painting a vivid picture of India’s electrified future. A record-breaking peak demand of 250 GW was met in May 2024, soaring from 130 GW in 2014, with 241 GW tackled in June 2025. Power shortages, once a daunting 4.2% in 2013-14, have plummeted to a mere 0.1% by April 2025, achieving zero peak shortage.
Electricity generation surged by 5.2% in 2024-25, climbing from 1739 BU to 1829 BU. Rural areas now enjoy 22.6 hours of daily power, up from 12.5 hours in 2014, while urban centers bask in 23.4 hours. Installed capacity leaped to 475 GW by March 2025, with 34 GW added, including 29.5 GW from renewables. Thermal projects flourished, with 5.17 GW commissioned and 23.16 GW awarded, while Power Surge: India’s Electrifying Leap Forwardcoal stocks rose to 57.5 million tons by May 2025, bolstered by a 31% captive production increase to 153 million tons.

The revised SHAKTI policy streamlined coal allocation, enhancing business ease. Hydro initiatives gained momentum with Rs 12,461 crore for 31 GW of projects and Rs 4,136 crore for 15 GW in North Eastern states. Key hydro projects, like Himachal’s 800 MW Parbati-II and Nepal’s 669 MW Lower Arun, were greenlit. Transmission networks expanded to 4.95 lakh ckm, with plans to reach 6.48 lakh by 2032, supported by Rs 9.15 lakh crore. Sustainability shone through 13.2 GWh of battery storage and new building codes promising 18% energy savings, cementing India’s green energy ascent.
