ONGC Appointment Process Under Scrutiny: Experts Highlight Concerns Over Director (Exploration) Selection

Report By S.Rawat: New Delhi: Experts have shared their perspectives on the recent controversy surrounding allegations of favoritism in the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) concerning transfers and promotions. According to industry observers, the accusations of bias in the ongoing transfer and promotion processes appear to lack substantial evidence at this stage.

However, significant attention has been drawn to a particular name featured in the candidate list for the upcoming interview for the position of Director (Exploration) at ONGC, scheduled for April 17, 2025, sparking widespread discussion within the industry.

It is well-established that ONGC does not have a direct role in the appointment process, as it is managed by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB). Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that the ONGC Chairman participates in the PESB board meeting during the interview process and plays an important advisory role.
Experts suggest that if the candidate currently under discussion is confirmed for the Director (Exploration) position, it could raise questions about the transparency of ONGC’s appointment procedures.

All stakeholders emphasize the need for fairness and meritocracy in the selection process. The industry is now closely watching the PESB’s final decision, which is expected to significantly influence ONGC’s future trajectory.
