NHPC Set to Commission Parbati-II

New Delhi: The dry run of generating units at Parbati-2 has begun, and all four 200 MW units are expected to be commissioned and synchronized by March 31, 2025, according to NHPC CMD.
The prestigious Parbati Hydroelectric Project, Stage-II (800 MW) in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, is on the verge of completion. The project has recently been inspected by Director (Projects & Technical), Sh. Sanjay Kumar Singh. He inspected Dam, Head Race Tunnel and Power House components etc.Nhpc parvati-2

The commissioning is targeted for March 31, 2025. The project team, headed by Sh. Nirmal Singh, Executive Director, Chandigarh Region, is making concerted efforts to meet this deadline.

Significant progress has been achieved, with all necessary approvals obtained, and power generation is expected to commence in March 2025. The project’s design energy stands at 3,074 MU, and its commissioning will also enhance the generation capacity of the 520 MW Parbati-III Power Station by 1,262 MU annually.

As a run-of-the-river scheme, the project features an 83.7m high concrete gravity dam near Village Pulga, a 31.56 km long Head Race Tunnel (HRT)—the longest hydropower tunnel in India—and two inclined pressure shafts (1,545.5m each), whicParvati-2h are the longest of their kind in the world. Himachal Pradesh will receive 12% free power from the project, with an additional 1% allocated for local area development.

The project, whose foundation stone was laid in 1999, faced multiple challenges, including cloudbursts, flash floods, rock bursts, and geological difficulties, leading to delays from its original scheduled commissioning in September 2009. However, due to all out efforts by NHPC management and project team, the project has reached at commissioning stage and the final adit gate of HRT was closed on March 5, 2025, and reservoir filling is underway, with dry testing of Power House units already initiated.

Significant infrastructure development has been undertaken by NHPC in the project area, including the construction of 15 bridges and 88 km of roads, as well as an investment of ₹112 crore in local area development. Under its CSR initiatives, NHPC has spent ₹27.83 crore on health, social, and community welfare, along with livelihood assistance for 370 project-affected families. Additionally, a Kendriya Vidyalaya is being operated at Sainj for local benefit, incurring an annual cost of ₹4 crore.

With the commissioning of this project, NHPC’s installed capacity will increase to 8,032 MW, reinforcing its position as a leading green energy company. The successful execution of the Parbati-II project marks a significant milestone in NHPC’s Golden Jubilee year.

Impact on NHPC Share Price

The commissioning of Parbati-II is expected to positively influence NHPC’s stock performance, given the increase in installed capacity and revenue generation potential. Investors are likely to respond favorably, considering the project’s contribution to renewable energy expansion and long-term profitability. The completion of one of India’s most challenging hydropower projects strengthens NHPC’s credentials, which may boost investor confidence and drive share price appreciation in the future.
