NHPC Executive Director Uday Shankar Sahi Highlights Strategic Collaboration with BEML for Advanced Desilting Solutions

NHPC and BEML Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on December 16, 2024, at BEML Soudha, Bangalore, marking a significant step towards innovation in hydroelectric power solutions. The agreement was exchanged by NHPC’s Executive Director (R&D), Uday Shankar Sahi, and BEML’s Aerospace SBU Head, RGK Rao, in the presence of senior officials from both organizations.

The partnership is aimed at developing advanced, indigenized desilting and dredging solutions tailored for hydroelectric power plants, addressing the critical issue of dam sedimentation. Designed under the “Make in India” initiative, these solutions are expected to enhance power generation efficiency, extend the lifespan of turbines and water conductor systems, and reduce maintenance costs.

Through this initiative, solutions are also being developed to address broader challenges beyond hydroelectric plants. Potential applications include mitigating urban waterlogging, improving inland waterways, and supporting India’s Maritime Vision 2030 and Sagarmala programs. Successful pilot projects are anticipated to pave the way for wider adoption across India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

NHPC CMD R.K. Chaudhary stated, “This partnership with BEML underscores NHPC’s dedication to sustainability and innovation. We are confident that this collaboration will deliver solutions benefiting the power sector, the environment, and local communities.”

BEML CMD Shantanu Roy emphasized the alliance’s transformative impact, highlighting its contribution to sustainable water management and infrastructure development.

NHPC, India’s largest hydropower developer, boasts an installed capacity of 7,232.90 MW, while BEML’s expertise spans defence, mining, and infrastructure equipment. Both entities are committed to driving national growth through innovation and self-reliance.

This collaboration is set to revolutionize hydropower operations, demonstrating a significant leap in India’s renewable energy journey.
