Bhupendra Gupta Recommended as New CMD of NHPC by PESB

New Delhi, June 10, 2025 – A significant leadership transition in India’s public sector power industry has taken shape with the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) recommending Bhupendra Gupta for the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited. The development is seen as a strong step towards continuity in leadership and governance reforms in the hydropower sector.
A total of nine candidates were interviewed by PESB for the top position. Bhupendra Gupta, currently serving as Director (Technical) at THDC India Ltd, brings with him more than two decades of technical and strategic experience in the hydropower and renewable energy sector. His name emerged as the frontrunner after a rigorous selection process.
According to sources familiar with the matter, another candidate was also strongly in contention. However, personal issues reportedly hindered the final consideration, shifting the tide in favor of Gupta. The interview was described as detailed and competitive, with focus on leadership qualities, energy transition strategies, and long-term institutional vision.
A senior CMD from the power sector expressed his appreciation while speaking to NewsIP, stating, “After a long time, NHPC is poised to receive a CMD with a potentially long tenure and strong industry grounding. PESB’s decision reflects maturity and foresight, and we welcome it wholeheartedly.”
NHPC, India’s premier hydropower company, is currently spearheading several green energy and climate action projects, and the appointment of a capable CMD is considered crucial for accelerating these national priorities. The move aligns well with the government’s renewed focus on sustainable infrastructure, energy security, and public sector efficiency.
Gupta’s potential elevation is being viewed not only as a personal milestone but also as a strategic asset for NHPC, as the company navigates evolving environmental challenges and increasing demand for renewable energy solutions.
