ADB Pledges Support for India’s Urban Development Vision

New Delhi, May 30, 2025: A significant step toward realizing “Viksit Bharat 2047” was taken today as   Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, and Asian Development Bank (ADB) President, Mr. Masato Kanda, convened at Shram Shakti Bhawan to discuss transformative investments in Indian urbanization.

The meeting focused on ADB’s unwavering support for India’s urban development, with emphasis on Mass Transit Systems, Inclusive Housing, Urban Sanitation, and Infrastructure. Shri Lal highlighted the remarkable progress under flagship missions like Swachh Bharat, AMRUT, and PMAY-Urban, noting the rapid expansion of Multi-Modal Transit Systems. Opportunities for ADB to align investments with India’s urban agenda were explored, aiming to foster sustainable and inclusive cities.

Mr. Kanda praised India’s Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) for tackling air pollution and transportation challenges, calling it a model of innovation. He advocated for integrated planning and private-sector involvement to amplify such successes. Discussions also underscored the Urban Challenge Fund’s role in enhancing project bankability with Municipal Corporation support.

The meeting concluded with optimism, as Secretary Srinivas Katikithala expressed gratitude for ADB’s commitment. Demonstration projects were proposed as future blueprints, reinforcing India’s path to becoming a global urban leader.
